Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 27, 2026
Separate Ways ("Separate Ways," "we," "us," or "our") provides a free app and divorce concierge support that helps people organize and navigate a divorce: tracking their situation, documents, property, finances and children's needs, coordinating with a Separate Ways concierge, and, when they choose to, connecting with attorneys, family and child counselors, real estate agents and other professionals in our Trusted Network.
Because of what Separate Ways helps with, the information in your account can be sensitive: details about your marriage, your finances, your children and your legal situation. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights you have — including how to delete your account and your data from inside the app.
Separate Ways is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. Using the app does not create an attorney-client relationship with Separate Ways or with any professional in our network until you separately engage that professional.
Information we collect
We collect information in three ways: what you give us, what the app records as you use it, and what comes from integrations you choose to use.
Information you provide
- Account and profile information: your email address, name or display name, and, if you choose to share it, your gender.
- Divorce Scope and case details: your filing status, state and county, divorce stage, and the guided answers you give about your family, home, property, finances, children, and what has already been filed.
- Documents: files you upload or generate in the app, such as petitions, financial records, property records, and other case-related documents.
- Property and finances: details you record about real estate, vehicles, household items, other assets, income, expenses and debts.
- Children's information: if applicable to your situation, details you record about your children, custody and parenting schedules, and related expenses and counseling needs.
- Messages: content you send through in-app messaging with your Separate Ways concierge, an attorney, a counselor, or other professionals you connect with.
- Communications with us: anything you send to support, a concierge, or through an application (for example, an attorney, counselor or real estate agent network application).
- Payment information: if you or a professional pays for a service through Separate Ways, billing details are collected and processed by our payment processor, Stripe — see "Sharing your information" below.
Information collected automatically
- Device and usage information such as app version, operating system, and basic interaction data used to operate, secure and improve the app.
- Security-relevant records, such as sign-in activity and an internal audit log of sensitive account actions (for example, role or account-status changes), used to keep the platform safe and accountable.
Information from integrations
If a Separate Ways concierge or professional connects their calendar to coordinate appointments with you, scheduling information from that integration (such as availability and appointment times) is used to support that coordination. We do not access your personal calendar unless you separately choose to connect one.
How we use your information
- To provide the app: show your Divorce Scope answers back to you, build your My Divorce dashboard and next steps, and store your documents, property, finances and messages.
- To provide your free divorce concierge and, when you ask for it, to present Trusted Network attorney, counselor or real estate agent options for you to review and choose from.
- To process payments, when you or a professional pays for a service, through our payment processor.
- To send transactional email and in-app notifications related to your account, such as confirmations, security notices, and messages from your concierge or a professional you've connected with.
- To secure the platform: detect and prevent fraud, abuse and unauthorized access, and maintain the audit log described above.
- To operate, maintain and improve Separate Ways, including diagnosing problems and understanding how the app is used in aggregate.
- To comply with legal obligations, such as tax and accounting requirements tied to billing records.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your divorce case details to show you third-party advertising.
Sharing your information
We share information only as described here — never as a general data sale:
- Professionals you choose to connect with. If you request attorney help, review Trusted Attorney options, or connect with a counselor or real estate agent, the relevant case information is shared with the professional you choose to connect with, so they can help you. You control what is shared and can review your sharing choices in Settings.
- Your Separate Ways concierge and staff who coordinate your account and help answer requests you make.
- Stripe, our payment processor, for billing when a payment is made through Separate Ways. Stripe processes and retains payment details under its own privacy policy; Separate Ways does not store full payment card numbers.
- Service providers who host our infrastructure, send transactional email, or otherwise help us operate the app, under contracts that limit their use of your information to providing that service.
- Legal and safety reasons, if required to comply with the law, a valid legal process, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Separate Ways, our users, or the public.
We do not share your case details with other consumers, with professionals you have not connected with, or with advertisers.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active, so the app can continue to work the way it's supposed to.
You can delete your own account at any time from Settings in the app (web and mobile). When you request deletion:
- Your account is deactivated immediately — you are signed out and the account can no longer be used to sign in.
- Your case information, documents, messages and other personal content are then permanently deleted after a 14-day grace period, which exists so an accidental or reconsidered request can be canceled before anything is erased. You can cancel from the app at any point during that window.
- Billing records tied to Stripe (for example, invoices and subscription history associated with a law firm's account) are retained after deletion where we are required to keep them for legal, tax or accounting reasons. These records are not part of your personal case workspace.
- Records of certain security-relevant actions may be retained in anonymized form (with the identifying link to your account removed) as part of our internal audit history.
You can read more about exactly how this works in our Terms of Service, and you can request deletion at any time from Settings → Delete account in the app.
Your rights and choices
- Access and correction: you can review and update most of your information directly in the app.
- Deletion: you can delete your account and personal content as described above.
- Sharing controls: you can review and change what is shared with a connected attorney or professional in Settings.
- Communication preferences: transactional messages related to your account and active requests will continue as needed to operate the service.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act or other state privacy laws, including the right to know what information we hold about you and to request its deletion. You can exercise these rights using the in-app tools above or by contacting us at the email below.
Children's privacy
Separate Ways is intended for adults going through a divorce. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect account information directly from children. Information about a user's children that a parent or guardian chooses to record (for example, in the Children area of the app) is collected from and controlled by that parent or guardian as part of managing their own divorce situation.
Security
We use technical and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including encryption in transit, access controls based on your account type and role, and an internal audit trail for sensitive actions. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security of information you provide.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Separate Ways changes. We will update the "Last updated" date above, and for material changes we will provide additional notice, such as an in-app or email notification.
